Details

The Author
The Belgian company Ardennes-Coticule, founded in 1998, is carrying on the business activities started by the first owner, Burton, in 1865, maintaining the age-old Renaissance knowhow in the production of the whetstone Coticule.

The Object
The sharpening stone is mined from soft, grey-yellow sedimentary rocks built up from clay and volcanic ash, the consistency of Ardennes’ soil. An ideal, quick and delicate way to sharpen your valuable knives and razors.

Usage

Preparation:

Pour water on the honing surface of the whetstone. Create an abrasive grinding compound by making circular movements with a slurry stone over the honing surface of the whetstone. This can also be done with a finger. After a while, reduce the abrasiveness during honing by gradually diluting the grinding compound with water. After diluting the grinding compound, continue sharpening with a little water until the desired fineness is obtained.

Small curved blades are sharpened with alternately moving both sides of the blade while pressing gently and at the correct angle (10°) across the whetting surface.
Small straight blades are sharpened with alternately moving both sides of the blade while pressing gently and at the correct angle (10°) across the whetting surface. Large objects are sharpened by laying them on a sturdy surface and making circular movements along both sides of the blade with the whetstone.

Making the surface flat:

Place a sheet of sandpaper grind 80 - 100 on a flat surface. Add a little water and rub the polishing surface of the whetstone. Flat again on it by making circular movements.

Storage of the whetstone:

Belgian whetstones do not have to be cleaned before being stored. They are non-porous stones, which mean that the polishing surface cannot clog up. Keep the box free of water to prevent deformation.
